DHAKA, Dec 28, 2024 (BSS)-Off the field, Bangladesh cricket went through a major renovation following the ouster of Awami League government after the student-led mass movement. But on the field, it was a perpetual case of disappointment. There was individual brilliance but they lacked collective effort which resulted in more losing than winning the game.
Bangladesh's stat in each format
Bangladesh played nine matches in ODIs this year, winning just three and losing six. The Tigers played three series this year, winning against Sri Lanka by 2-1, losing against Afghanistan by 2-1 and 3-0 against West Indies.
They played 10 Tests, won three and lost seven. Starting with 2-0 loss to Sri Lanka, they thereafter won the landmark series against Pakistan before conceding the series to India and South Africa. They ended the year drawing series against West Indies by 1-1. They played 24 T20 Internationals-winning 12 and losing 12.
High Point, low point
The high point of the year was Bangladesh's 2-0 sweep against Pakistan in Test format and the low point was Bangladesh's 2-0 whitewash at the hands of USA in T20 format. In Women's cricket, Bangladesh tasted a 3-0 whitewash to Ireland in T20 format.
A brilliant year for Miraz
Mehidy Hasan Miraz ended the year as the second best allrounder in Test ranking, whereas he was not even in top 10 at the beginning. That rise showed how consistent he was in this format. In fact he topped the batting and bowling chart for Bangladesh in this format raising the prospect that he can emulate Shakib Al Hasan if continues such surge. Miraz was key in helping Bangladesh win the landmark series in Pakistan. In both Tests, he performed up to the mark with batting and bowling to help the side sweep the series and became the series best.
Miraz eventually scored 614 runs and took 31 wickets to cap what was an outstanding year for him.
He had a tough battle with Hasan Mahmud in bowling. Hasan ended the year second best despite setting a record for Bangladeshi pacers in a calendar year with 30 wickets. In batting, Mominul Haque came next to Miraz. One of the three centuries by Bangladeshi batter in the year came from his bat.
Mahmudullah remains indomitable
Bangladesh has played only 9 ODIs this year. Mahmudullah Riyad has scored the most runs in those nine matches. 294 of Mahmudullah's 337 runs in 2024 have come in the last four matches. After scoring 98 runs in the last ODI against Afghanistan in Sharjah, the experienced cricketer made 50, 62 and 84 not out in three matches against West Indies However, unfortunately, Bangladesh lost all of those four matches. Taskin took the highest 14 wickets in seven matches.
Hridoy best in T20 in Rishad's record-breaking year
Towhid Hridoy was ruled out in the series against West Indies but he still finished as the highest run-getter for Bangladesh in T20 format. Hridoy scored 493 runs in 20 matches to be the Bangladesh's most successful batter. He shares the record of sixes with Jaker Ali Anik by hitting 21 sixes.
Bangladesh has played 24 T20Is this year. Rishad Hossain is the only player who played in those all 24 matches to take the highest 35 wickets for Bangladesh. That also set a record. No other bowler for Bangladesh has taken more than 30 wickets in this edition in a calendar year. Taskin also set an example of taking 30 wickets this year. Rishad-Taskin went past Mustafizur Rahman's 28 in 2021.
Miraz, Taskin all format best of Bangladesh
This year, only Mehidy Hasan Miraz has scored more than a thousand runs for Bangladesh in all three formats. But he has yet to hone the art of scoring a century. This year he went past 50-run mark seven times but couldn't convert any of them into a century in 30 innings.
Taskin Ahmed has revolutionized bowling. Taskin, who took 240 wickets in his 10-year international career, has taken 63 wickets this year. Only one has taken more wickets for Bangladesh in a calendar year- and the name is predictable. In 2010, Shakib Al Hasan took 77 wickets in all three editions.
