DHAKA, Dec 28, 2024 (BSS) – Police arrested seven people in an extortion case at a residential hotel in capital’s Gulshan.
 
The arrested were identified as Rakib alias Abu Zayer (20), Md Monir Hossain (19), Farhad Hossain Shaon (23), Asif Sheikh (20), Ariful Islam Emon (24), Ahmed Hossain (23) and Md Sajib Hossain (19).

Gulshan Police Station of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested them at 00:05 hrs on Saturday while extorting money at a residential hotel in Gulshan-2, said a DMP press release.

Three motorcycles used in the extortion were also seized.

Gulshan Police said that 10-12 unidentified people went to a residential hotel named “Rose Wood Residence Ltd” in Gulshan-2 at around 9:00 pm on December 24 and demanded toll from the hotel staff, mentioning themselves as men of “Bilas Dada”. They threatened to vandalize the establishment if the toll was not paid. 

The next day, an unknown number called the mobile phone of the hotel manager Md. Faraduzzaman, claiming himself as Bilas Dada at around 01:50 pm and demanded money as toll.

On the same day, a person named Hamid, identifying himself as representative of Bilas Dada called and asked for the decision on the demanded toll at 3:10 pm.

Based on this, at around 9:30 pm on December 27, 25-30 unidentified people, including the arrested seven, entered the hotel and demanded a monthly extortion of Taka 50,000.

When the staff refused to pay, they misbehaved and harassed the local and foreign guests at the hotel.

Then, through the manager Faraduzzaman, the hotel owner was asked to come to the hotel within five minutes and pay the extortion they demanded. If not, they threatened to vandalize the hotel.

As the hotel owner immediately reported the matter to the national emergency service 999, a team of Gulshan Police reached there as soon as possible.

Sensing the presence of police, they tried to escape, but the law enforcers rounded up seven of them.

At that time, the others who were with them fled away.

The police seized two Suzuki brand motorcycles and a TVS brand motorcycle from them.

An extortion case has been registered at the Gulshan Police Station following the complaint of the hotel owner Mehedi Hasan Tushar.
