MUNSHIGANJ, Dec 29, 2024 (BSS) - Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Secretary General Kader Gani Chowdhury today underscored the need for practicing objective journalism to earn the trust of the common people.
"People trust those journalists who maintain objectivity in journalism and present the true picture of the society," he told an annual general meeting of Munshiganj Union of Journalists this morning.
"Many journalists had to flee the country as they didn't maintain even the basic ethics and principles of journalism, he said, adding, "This is a great shame for the media".
Kader Gani said lack of truth and dictated journalism are not desirable as bad journalism taints society, country and human civilization.
"The victory of truth is always certain. Therefore, revealing the truth and searching for the truth is the only job of journalism," he added.
BFUJ acting President Obaidur Rahman Shahin, Vice President AKM Mohsin, Organizing Secretary Erfanul Haque Nahid and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) President Md. Shahidul Islam also spoke in the AGM.
Munshiganj Union of Journalists President Kazi Biplob Hasan chaired the AGM while its general secretary Md. Rubel moderated it.
Noting that objective journalism was rarely seen in Bangladesh during Awami League government, Kader Gani said objectivity means not to exaggerate or minimize any event or issue.
"Whatever the reporter's personal likes or dislikes, there will be no comments in the report. There are inevitably multiple sides to events and issues. Impartiality means that a journalist will be not on any side and he or she will give information in a balanced manner," he said.
He also said fairness of journalism means that reporting where both sides' statements will be presented as fairly as possible.
