Legal notice sent for compensation over mother, newborn’s death in Noakhali

DHAKA, Dec 29, 2024 (BSS) - A lawyer of the Supreme Court today sent legal notice to officials concerned including health and finance secretaries for giving Taka 50 crore in compensation over deaths of a mother and her newborn due to alleged negligence and wrong treatment by the doctors in a Noakhali hospital.

Barrister Md Solaiman sent the letters to officials concerned including health secretary, finance secretary, director general of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), registrar of the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council, Noakhali civil surgeon, Noakhali South Bangla Hospital, its director Md Mohiuddin and Noakhali Sonaimuri Health Complex junior consultant Dr Md Akter Hossain Ovy and his wife Dr Foujia Farid, among others.

According to the notice, Umme Salma Shishir was admitted to Noakhali South Bangla Hospital on October 16, 2023, for delivery. Dr Md Akter Hossain Ovy and Dr Foujia Farid at the time with the help of South Bangla Hospital medical assistant Zahid Hossain hastily conducted C-section on Shishir, without even taking approval from her family.

Umme Salma Shishir and her newborn child both died on the operating table. But to cover-up the botched surgery, the accused doctors sent already dead Shishir to another hospital for ICU support. As Shishir’s family took her to Cumilla Tower Hospital, the authorities there informed that she has died much earlier.

Barrister Md Solaiman in his notice demanded to take actions against the accused and provide the victim family Taka 50 crore in compensation.
