Political parties having public mandate can change constitution: Rizvi

NILPHAMARI, Dec 30, 2024 (BSS)- Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi today said a political party having people’s mandate can only change the country’s constitution.

“Constitution is the autobiography of a nation and it can be amended by adding or subtracting anything considering the time, situation and context. But an elected political party can only do this,” he said.

“Any fascist narrative in the constitution can be removed and it’s the responsibility of the political party having public mandate,” he added.

Rizvi was addressing virtually a BNP rally organized by Amra BNP Paribar at Dubachhuri Dimukhi Dakhil Madrasha here today.

The rally was organized on the occasion of handover a newly built house to family of slain BNP leader Golam Rabbani who was allegedly killed in RAB crossfire on January 18, 2014.

Rizvi said, the characteristics of Awami fascism and Baksal must be removed from the constitution. But its complete abolition is tantamount to denying the War of Liberation and Independence, he said.

Rizvi said people's expectations have changed and the interim government is the result of that change. BNP has stood beside this government with full support, he said adding the interim government must maintain its neutrality.

The senior joint secretary general said, “Tarique Rahman has proven through his activities that he is the undisputed leader of Bangladesh. He is the real leader. He is the natural leader."

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman addressed the programme as the chief guest.
