Good governance is must to build welfare state: Adviser Sharmeen

DHAKA, Jan 2, 2025 (BSS) – Social Welfare Adviser Sharmeen S Murshid today underscored the need for establishing good governance for building welfare-based state in future.

"Our all works are carried out for bringing welfare for all… If good governance is established properly in the country, a welfare based state can be built," she said.
The adviser said these while addressing an open discussion as the chief guest on a makeshift stage at Manik Mia Avenue adjacent to the National Parliament here under the arrangement of the Department of Social Services of the Social Welfare Ministry marking the National Social Service Day-2025.

Special Assistant to the Adviser for Education, Professor M Aminul Islam, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs Mamtaz Ahmed and Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare Dr Md Mohiuddin were present on the occasion.

Director General of the Department of Social Services Md Saidur Rahman Khan gave the welcome speech in the discussion while Professor of the Department of International Relations of Dhaka University Dr Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan and Associate Professor of the Department of Sociology of Dhaka University Dr Samina Luthfa jointly conducted it.

The discussion was the second part of today's National Social Service Day celebration programme.

Earlier, in the first part of the programme, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus formally inaugurated a Walkathon and Social Service Conference on the Manik Mia Avenue here.

National Social Service Day-2025 is being observed in the country today at the initiative of the Social Welfare Ministry through different programmes.

This year's theme of the day is 'Those who have no one by their side, have social service (Nei Pashe Kew Jar, Somaj Seba Ache Tar)'.

Sharmeen S Murshid, also Women and Children Affairs Adviser, said all governments are “interim” governments as an elected government is formed for five years.

Each government should remember that its tenure ends after each five years, she said, adding that the recent past, especially before August 5, it was seen that the government ignored the matter and wanted to stay in power as long as they can.

Without building a welfare state, the previous government remained in power pursuing many illegal ways, she said.

But none can stay in power through wrongdoings forever and the perfect example of it is the 'Year 2024', said Sharmeen.

She urged all to stay away from the practice of misrule and wrongdoings for building a welfare state.

She stressed on ensuring meritocracy in the country as the youths sacrificed their valuable lives in July-August uprising taking a stance against the 'Quota' system.

The development of the country must take place on the basis of merit, she said.

The adviser also underscored the need for strengthening several matters such as quality control, evaluation and monitoring of all works in the state structure.

She said a separate authority would be formed to properly supervise the 72,000 voluntary social welfare organizations in the country.

The interim government would take further steps to improve and monitor the quality of services, she added.

"It is not possible for the government to form a welfare state alone. For this, everyone will have to come forward," she said.

Talking about 'disabled persons' in society, she urged all not to call them ‘disabled’ but especially talented persons.

All should highlight the merit of the especially talented persons in society, she said.
