CHATTOGRAM, Jan 2, 2025, (BSS)- A Chattogram court has again refused bail prayer of of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, an expelled ISKON leader and spokesperson of the Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote (SSJJ) in a sedition case.
Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Saiful Islam rejected the bail prayer after hearing amid tight security measures in and around the court premises today.
Supreme Court lawyers belongs to Ainjibi Oikkya Parishad led by advocate Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee who is also a SSJJ leader moved the bail petition on behalf of Chinmoy.
Public Prosecutor (PP) Md Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan confirmed the matter to BSS.
Talking to journalists A A M Humayun Kabir, Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police said the bail hearing for Chinmoy took place today amid tight security to avert any untoward incident.
Advocate Nazim Uddin Chowdhury, president of the Chattogram District Bar Association, told journalists that the defense lawyers pleaded for granting bail to Chinmoy arguing that their client has not violated the sedition law.
Opposing the bail petition, the prosecution side told the court that an accused under the sedition case may get life-term imprisonment. So, Chinmoy was not eligible for bail at the stage of investigation of the case.
Following the hearing, Chinmoy's lawyer advocate Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee told journalists that they will move to the High Court for bail.
Chinmoy along with 18 others were accused in a sedition case filed with Kotowali police on October 31, 2024 on charge of desecrating the national flag.
Detectives arrested him from Dhaka Shahjalal International Airport on November 25 last and handed over him to Chattogram Metropolitan Police the following day.
Chinmoy’s followers locked in fierce clash with law enforcers following rejection of the bail petition by a metropolitan magistrate court on November 26.
Meanwhile, unruly protesters ransacked court premises, vandalized lawyers’ car and also attacked the lawyers after rejection of the bail prayers.
At one stage, the goons equipped with lethal weapons attacked and brutally slaughtered advocate Saiful Islam Alif, a promising Supreme Court enrolled lawyer.
Chinmoy’s lawyers submitted another bail for hearing on December 3, 2024. But no lawyer stood to represent the accused. Later the court deferred the hearing on Jan 2, 2025.
