DHAKA, Jan 8, 2025 (BSS) – Detective Branch (DB) today recovered eight endangered capped langurs (Mukh-pora hanuman) in the capital’s Jatrabari area and arrested two persons in this connection.

The arrestees were identified as Md Rafikul Islam, 43 and Md Rabiul Islam Sohag, 30, said a media release of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Acting on a tip-off, Wari Zonal Team of DB conducted a drive in Kazla Bridge areas at about 5am as they came to know that some members of a smuggling gang were going to the area to smuggle some endangered wildlife.

In the raid they recovered the capped langurs and arrested the two.  

DB said that the arrested persons are active members of an organized wildlife smuggling gang.

At the initial interrogation, the arrestees confessed that they collected the endangered capped langurs from the hilly areas of Chattogram and were taking those to the Satkhira border for smuggling.

When the arrested persons were presented before the mobile court, the Executive Magistrate fined Taka 6,000 and sentenced them to 21 days in prison under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2012. If they become default of payment of the fine, the court also handed them to another seven days in prison.

The recovered capped langurs have been handed over to the Wildlife Crime Suppression Unit of the Forest Department following due process.
