DHAKA, Jan 12, 2025 (BSS) - The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized a huge number of smuggled goods worth over Taka 2,184.28 crore from different frontiers and parts of the country in the last year (from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024).
Those smuggling goods included gold, bronze, sharees, cosmetics, sugar, cigarette and drugs, said a press release of the BGB.
During this period, the BGB arrested 2,088 people for their alleged involvement in smuggling of those goods. Legal actions have been taken against them.
The seized contraband items include 131.424kg gold, 137.289 kg silver, 2,14,805 sarees, 2,10,063 three-piece, lehengas and ready-made garments, 3,322,361 cosmetic items, 7,015,824 kgs of sugar, 58,274 kgs of tea leaves, 2,35,446 kgs of onions, 3,38,497 kgs of garlic, 65,298 kg of cumin, 89,365 kg of fish, 4,31,407 kg of betel nut, 48,598 cubic feet of wood, 6,053 cubic feet of stone, 7,37,180 kg of coal, 61,144 pieces of imitation jewelry, 17 touchstone-made statues, 14.81 kgs of snake venom, 8.398 kgs of whale vomit (Ambergris), 33,132 kgs of current net, 1,267,148 packets of bidis and cigarettes, 25,624 kg of fertilizer, 12,262 liters of diesel-petrol-octane, 9,907 mobiles, 1,00,005 mobile displays, 3,60,288 pieces of spectaculars, 10,32,094 pieces of chocolate, 2,78,253 packets of biscuits, 2,180 packets of pesticides, 38.400 kgs of turtle bones, 2,51,64,507 pieces of fireworks, 207 trucks and covered vans, 8 buses, 47 private cars-microbuses, 91 pickups, 383 CNG-easy bikes, 873 motorcycles and 235 bicycles.
The weapons recovered during the same period included 38 pistols, 5 SMGs, 18 grenades, 8 rifles, 6 revolvers, 52 guns, 8,859 rounds of ammunition, 45 magazines, 4 mortar shells, 41 cocktails, 10.44 kg of gun powder, and 233 blank cartridges.
