DHAKA, Jan 16, 2025 (BSS) – National University (NU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr ASM Amanullah today said that honours-masters courses will not be introduced at random to sustain the quality of higher education.

“From now on no more honours-masters courses will be opened indiscriminately. In the previous government's tenure, honours-masters courses have been opened up in many educational institutions across the country under political consideration which resulted in degradation of the quality of higher education," he said.

NU VC said these while addressing a programme organized to mark the graduation (pass) affiliation of Dinarpur College at Nabiganj in Habiganj as the chief guest.

He said despite the lack of institutional infrastructure, the previous government has done commercialization of education out of political motivation.

Despite the lack of trained index-holding teachers, LAB facilities, libraries, seminars, classrooms and even sanitation facilities, many institutions have launched honours and masters degrees through various means especially political lobbying, he added.

Issuing a stern warning against launching such degrees in the institutes, the NU VC said legal action will be taken quickly after evaluating the educational activities.

Nabiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Anupam Das Anup presided over the programme while the principal, teachers and students of Dinarpur College were present on the occasion.

At the end of the programme, the NU VC placed a wreath at the martyrs' altar of the July-August mass uprising there.
