Govt to provide all-out support to martyrs' families: Sakhawat

HIZLA, BARISHAL, Jan 20, 2025 (BSS) - Shipping adviser Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain has said that the interim government would provide all-out support to the families of martyrs of the July-August uprising.

The adviser on Sunday came up with the assurance as he visited the native home of martyr Riaz, who was killed during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said a press release today.

During the visit, the adviser met with the family members of Riaz and consoled them. He also handed over financial assistance to the family. 

The shipping adviser also visited the grave of the martyr and offered doa and munajat seeking eternal peace for his departed soul.

Earlier, the shipping adviser inaugurated a pantoon at Hizla Launch Ghat located at Ghosher Char under the Guabaria union parishad in Barishal, naming the pantoon after martyr Riaz as a mark of profound respect and remembering the memory of the martyr.

BIWTA chairman Arif Ahmed Mostafa, director (port and transport) Areef Uddin, Chief Engineer Mahidul Islam, and Hizla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jahangir Hossen, among others, were present during the visit.

Riaz, son of Mahmudul Huq, hailing from Lakhipur village under Hizla upazila in Barishal district, was an honors final-year student of Barishal Muladi Degree College, and he was also working at a private organization in the capital.

Riaz was shot in his head during a protest rally in the city's Jigatola area on August 4, 2024. He later died on August 17 while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
