Govt is determined to prevent violence against women, children: Sharmin S Murshid

DHAKA, Jan 22, 2025 (BSS) - Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Adviser Sharmin S. Murshid today said the government is determined to resist violence against women and children at any cost.

“The role of the quick response team in supporting survivors of gender-based violence is very crucial in preventing violence against women and children even in remote areas,” she said.

The adviser said this while addressing a workshop on the activities of Quick Response Team in resisting violence on women and children at CIRDAP auditorium here.

Ministry of Women and Children Affairs Senior Secretary Momtaz Ahmed chaired the workshop while Department of Women Affairs DG Keya Khan spoke as a special guest.

Joint Secretary of the ministry Dr Prakash Kanti Chowdhury highlighted the work of the Quick Response Team.

Sharmin S Murshid said such crimes are not decreasing to the expected extent although there are strict laws against violence on women and children in the country. Various types of violence and crimes are being committed against women and children in various ways, including in the family, workplace, and public space and online, she added.

In the true sense, violence against women and children is a clear violation of human rights, she said.

The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs is working in coordination with 14 ministries in a multi-sectoral approach.

Currently, under this ministry, 14 One-Stop Crisis Canters, 67 One-Stop Crisis Cells, Toll-Free National Helpline Centre (109) for Prevention of Violence against Women and Children, National Trauma Counselling Centre, eight Regional Trauma Counselling Canters, National Forensic DNA Profiling Laboratory, eight Divisional DNA Screening Laboratories, Real-Time Monitoring Database are working to prevent and for remedial measures of  the violence against women and children in the country.

Doctors, nurses, law enforcement officers, teachers, professionals, and NGO representatives, helpline service providers, representatives of development partners, student representatives, and media representatives were present at the workshop.

Later, the advisor attended a meeting on the rehabilitation of those injured in the July-August uprising.
