Ex-minister Nuruzzaman remanded for 5 days in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Jan 31, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today granted a five-day remand to former Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed in the murder case of Mahmudul Hasan Munna during the anti-discrimination movement in Rangpur.
 
Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Court-3 Judge Debi Rani Roy granted the remand when the Investigating Officer (IO) of the case Sub-inspector (SI) Mostafizur Rahman produced the accused with a 15-day remand prayer amid tight security measures.
 
"After hearing from both sides, the Judge granted Nuruzzaman's five-day remand in the murder case," the IO said.
 
Earlier, based on secret information, the Rangpur Metropolitan Police arrested Nuruzzaman Ahmed, the former Social Welfare minister and Lalmonirhat Awami League (AL) leader, from his one relative's house in the Post Office lane on Central Road in the metropolis around 8:30 pm on Thursday, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Majid Ali told local reporters.

Later, he was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for a physical examination and health check-up and his health condition was found okay. 
 
"There are several cases against him, including charges of assault, murder and attempt to murder during the anti-discrimination student movement," Majid Ali said.
 
A case has been filed against Nuruzzaman Ahmed and his son and 128 others in the incident of the death of Mahmudul Hasan Munna during the anti-discrimination movement in Rangpur.
 
Munna's father Abdul Majid filed the case in the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Kotwali Cognizance Court on August 29 last year.
 
In this case, police arrested Al-Amin Hossain, the leader of the banned organization Chhatra League, along with a sharp weapon while conducting a raid in city's Babupara station area at night on January 28.
 
Earlier on October 27 last year, Lalmonirhat District Detective Branch (DB) police arrested Shamsuzzaman Ahmed Bhutto, the younger brother of Nuruzzaman Ahmed, from Kaliganj Bazar in the same case.
 
Additionally, the former minister has eight more cases filed against him at different police stations in Lalmonirhat district since August 5.
