Transform UN peace operation into more environment friendly discussed at the UN

DHAKA, Feb 4, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, has called for transforming peacekeeping missions into more environmentally friendly entities, aligning with the Global Goals and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Transforming the peacekeeping missions into more environmentally friendly entities, adopting innovative approaches, saving biodiversity of the host countries and training of the peacekeepers discussed to supplement the work of Agenda 2030, he said.

Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury made these remarks while briefing on the contributions of Bangladesh's peacekeepers in the field, said a UN release received here today.

The Bangladesh delegation to the UN, along with the missions of Germany, Italy, the Republic of Korea, and Slovenia, co-hosted a side event titled "Environmental Impact of UN Peace Operations - from Ambition to Action" on January 31, 2025, at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Moderated by the Permanent Representative of Slovenia, the event aimed to raise awareness and discuss the achievements of UN peace operations in reducing their environmental footprint, as well as exploring possible transitions to renewable energy options.

Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support Mr. Atul Khare and a large number of delegates from member States attended the event.
