BNP urges govt. to make visible move in restoring law & order,

DHAKA, Feb 6, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has urged the interim government to take strict measures for restoring law and order across the country, making the role of the state and government more visible.

“We call on the interim government to establish control over the situation. If it fails to do so, wasting time on less significant issues would not be appropriate”, BNP told a statement issued on Thursday night.

Expressing concern, the BNP warned that if the public perceive that the government is incapable of handling the situation, it could threaten the stability of the state and the government.

Besides, such a scenario might create opportunities for extremist, anti-democratic forces both at home and abroad, as well as for defeated fascist elements to regain a foothold, said the statement.

BNP said, “We are observing with deep concern that the provocative actions of the exiled, defeated dictator and her associates,—who were ousted through the sacrifices of thousands of martyrs,—along with their inappropriate and offensive remarks about the bloody student uprising of July-August, have fueled anger and outrage among the people.”

“If citizens begin to take the law in their own hands while a government remains in place, it will inevitably raise questions about the very existence of the government both domestically and internationally”, read the statement.

“Everyone must remember that once the country is branded with the stigma of ‘mob justice,’ it will be detrimental for all,” it added.

The BNP said due to a lack of clarity on the government's plans, the people have been determining their own course of action. “When the government ignores public aspirations and imposes issues of its own choosing, the people, in turn, take matters in their own hands, as witnessed across the country on Wednesday”.

Eliminating or erasing something is not the only solution, it said, adding, “Even the shelters of fascists can serve as significant historical testimonies in the future,” the statement concluded.
