DHAKA, Feb 8, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Gastroenterology Society (BGS) said they will work to ensure specialized medical services related to gastroenterology as well as reduce the trend of patients seeking treatment abroad for various complicated diseases.

They said this at the installation ceremony of the newly elected committee of the BGS in a  hotel today, said a press release. 

The BGS leaders said around 2.6 percent of people in Bangladesh are affected by liver cirrhosis, while the number of patients infected with hepatitis B virus in the country is about 7 percent.

It addition, a large number of patients are waiting for liver transplantation, they added.

Mentioning that a huge number of people in Bangladesh are liver and digestive system patients, they said around 25 percent of patients come to hospitals as outpatients every day with liver and digestive system problems.

They also said the new committee will take necessary initiatives and plans to establish liver transplantation   medical services in Bangladesh and will play a leading role in implementing it with the support of the government.

National Professor Dr. AK Azad Khan was present at the ceremony as chief guest while Professor Dr. MT Rahman as special guest.

BGS President Professor Dr. AQM Mohsen, Vice Presidents Professor Dr. Md. Shamsul Arfin and Dr. ASM A Raihan, Secretary General Professor Dewan Saifuddin Ahmed and others office bearers were present.

The new committee of BGS was elected on December 28 last year.
