CHATTOGRAM, Feb 8, 2025 (BSS): Liberation War , Disaster Management and Relief Adviser Faruk-e-Azam Bir Pratik has said coordinated efforts are underway to provide at least a short-time relief to the port city dwellers from water logging in the upcoming monsoon.
Emphasizing importance on citizen’s awareness particularly keep them away from dumping garbage in the canals and drains, he said this year too, the city residents may not get complete relief from water logging. But the government is working relentlessly with maximum efforts to free the city permanently from the persisting miseries, he said.
The adviser said this at a meeting with officials of the concerned departments to resolve water logging in Chattogram city at local circuit house today.
Earlier, he inspected the cleaning activities of the Nalai Khal in Agrabad Bepari Para and the Baroi Para Khal in city’s Bahaddarhat.
Faruk-E-Azam said Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus has assigned four advisors to address the issue and find out a sustainable solution into the problem on an urgent basis.
He said at least one out of four advisers who were assigned to deal with the problem is arriving here every week rotationally to see the progress of city flood mitigation projects.
“We have already started working so that people of Chattogram could get at least some visible benefits from upcoming rainy season” he said adding that despite of huge budget deficits of Tk 54,000 crore, the government put highest priority on implementation of on-going projects as well as massive excavation and cleaning works at canals and drains.
“The city residents also have to be aware of freeing them from perennial sufferings by giving up old habit of throwing garbage at canals as well as constructing structures illegally on canals and drains.
“Otherwise, we will have to consider taking legal measures including fine and short-term imprisonment against the defiants” he warned.
The adviser appreciated the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) for achieving visible progress in keeping the city neat and clean as per promise made by new Mayor.
“If such efforts continue, the port city will be liveable and investment-friendly metropolis,” he said.
City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, Divisional Commissioner Dr. Md Ziauddin, Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanam, Chattogram Development Authority Chairman Eng. Nurool Karim, Additional Divisional Commissioner and Chattogram WASA acting Managing Director Anwar Pasha, City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Sk. Touhidul Islam, Dr. Md Manzoorul Kibria of Zoology Department of Chattogram University and officials from various government departments were present.
