Govt focuses on stewardship for sustainable agriculture: Shafiqul Alam

DHAKA, Feb 18, 2025 (BSS) - Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam today said the interim government, led by Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, is working on stewardship for sustainable agriculture to address future food crisis.

He came up with the remarks at a programme titled, "FGD on Stewardship for Sustainable Agriculture" organised by Business Initiative Leading Development (BUILD) at its auditorium here.

BUILD's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ferdaus Ara Begum presided over the meeting while journalist SM Rashidul Islam moderated it.

"We don't get the expected agricultural production due to lack of modern technology adaptation. If we fail to become sufficient in food, we will have to face trouble in global trade. We must increase our food production to avoid famines in the country like in 1974," Shafiqul said.

Speaking as the chief guest, he said the Netherlands is a small country like Bangladesh but the country exports agricultural products worth around 140 billion euros in previous year, thanks to the use of modern technology.
 
There was slow progress in disseminating of the technology in Bangladesh, he said.

Prof Yunus, he said, has already talked to that Dutch Ambassador to Bangladesh that how to boost agricultural production in Bangladesh with maximum use of its land. 

Alam stated that the country may face many multiple challenges in future. "So, we have to focus on sustainable agriculture as it's the way of our survival now," the press secretary said.

Professor of Plant Pathology at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Abu Noman Faruq Ahmmed presented a keynote paper at the event.
