Students want CCCSU polls by ensuring appropriate environment

RANGPUR, Feb 19, 2025 (BSS) - Urging to ensure necessary reforms, consensus
and appropriate environment, leaders of various student organisations and
general students want early elections of Carmichael College Central Students'
Union (CCCSU).

They expressed this opinion at a dialogue titled "Carmichael College
Dialogue: Students Union Elections" at the Annadamohan Hall of the college in
the city on Wednesday.

Carmichael College Principal Professor Md. Mostafizur Rahman was present at
the event.

Democracy International organised the dialogue in association with its co-
organiser the Debate Council of Carmichael College.

In her welcome address, the organisation's Chief of Party Catherine Cecil
said a tolerant and cooperative environment among all stakeholders is
essential for the students' union elections.

"The election of student representatives through a democratic process will
ensure the real participation of students in the management of the colleges
and universities," she added.

The dialogue was attended by Md. Shahidul Islam Mizu, the last elected former
general secretary of CCCSU and senior joint convener of Rangpur Metropolitan
BNP, Rakibus Sultan Manik, former general secretary of Carmichael College
Alumni Association and former CCCSU leader, Prof Dilip Kumar Roy, general
secretary of the Teachers' Association of the college, president of
Carmichael College Chhatra Dal Rabiul Islam, president of Islami Chhatra
Shibir Mehedi Hasan, joint convener of the National Chhatra Samaj Kamal Roy,
senior joint convener of the Rangpur district of the Anti-Discrimination
Student Movement Sajjad Hossain, college students Al-Mahmud Asad, Zannatul
Ferdous Ananya, Zarin Tasnima and Miftaul Jannat Sinthi as discussants.

The discussants said coordination between teachers, students, and the
administration is necessary to organise regular students' union elections.

A safe electoral environment must be created through the joint efforts and
understanding of all stakeholders. At the same time, everyone must be
committed to keeping the campus safe.

They said the main responsibility for creating and maintaining a fair
democratic environment in the campus is the students themselves. Everyone
must make a united and strong demand for the student parliament election.

At the same time, a fair and democratic election can be organised only by
ensuring peaceful coexistence on the campus. The college administration must
give importance to that issue.

The discussants also demanded that the constitution of the students' union be
reformed.

Associate Prof of the Bengali Department of Carmichael College Md. Matiar
Rahman moderated the programme while the organization's Rangpur Senior
Regional Manager Ali Ijad addressed it.

Democracy International Deputy Director Arafat Ali Siddique said the
initiative has been taken to hold dialogues with stakeholders in universities
and colleges across the country to strengthen consensus for the students'
union elections.

Besides, the dialogue will create an effective platform for exchange of views
among different parties, and formulate recommendations for a peaceful
environment and regular students' union elections.

"As part of this, the dialogue was organised in collaboration with the UK's
Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO)," he added.
