Road safety law to be enacted by 2027: Adilur

DHAKA, Feb 20, 2025 (BSS) - Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan today said the government has started working to enact a road safety law by 2027.

“A road safety law will be enacted in Bangladesh by 2027, and the government has already started working on this issue,” he said. 

Adilur, also adviser of the ministry of industries, made this remark on Wednesday night at the Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety held in Marrakesh, Morocco from February 18-20, said a press release here today.

In addition, Bangladesh also has a National Road Safety Strategic Action Plan, which aims to reduce the number of fatalities in road accidents by 50 percent within 2030.

The release said Bangladesh would develop a central information-based database system by 2026. It will collect, store and analyze data related to road accidents.

Besides, a speed control management guideline will also be formulated by 2026, which will ensure the effective implementation of the Motor Vehicle Speed ??Limit Guidelines of 2024. 

Moreover, a guideline will be developed by 2026 for the use of standard helmets, and its implementation.

Road Transport and Highways Division Additional Secretary Dr Mohammad Ziaul Haque, Chief Engineer of the Roads and Highways Department Syed Moinul Hasan, Director of Enforcement Department of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority Nazneen Hossain, Global Road Safety Advocacy and Grants Program Manager Taifur Rahman, Country Coordinator of Global Health Advocacy Incubator Dr. Shariful Alam, Founder and Chairman of Nirapad  Sarak Chai   film actor Ilias Kanchan, BRAC Road Safety Program Manager Khalid Mahmud and CIPRB's Dr. Selim Mahmud Chowdhury, among others, participated in  the event.
