Hasina, her cohorts trying to obstruct democracy: Fakhrul

DHAKA, Feb 27, 2025 (BSS) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from abroad and her cohorts from inside the country are making evil efforts to obstruct the democracy.

He said a quarter in the country is trying to create unrest by removing the names of renowned scholars of the united Bengal from various educational institutions and naming those after controversial persons. 

“We all have to be careful about this,” he told the extended meeting of the party at LD Hall of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Fakhrul Islm said BNP’s constant struggle forced Sheikh Hasina to flee the country and since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024 the people of Bangladesh are waiting to get back their voting rights.

BNP secretary general said country’s economic situation is very deplorable while prices of goods are on rise, law and order situation is deteriorating day by day and the universities are lacking from any atmosphere for education. 

“If this situation is not improved quickly, the country will be in deep crisis, he warned.

He expressed his gratitude to the leaders and workers of the party saying over the last 16 years, especially after landing party chairperson Khalda Zia to jail, BNP leaders and workers had to go through enormous sufferings and intimidation.

“Enormous number of our leaders and workers has been martyred and fell victim of enforced disappearance. False cases have been filed against six million people. A reign of terror was resorted and the entire nation was virtually under captivity.” 

He thanked the party men for making their desperate efforts to strengthen the BNP from the grassroots level.

BNP’s extended meeting has been called on four agenda such as current political situation, upcoming Jatiya Sangsad elections, party’s organizational matters and forging strong relations with allies.  

Began with the recitation of the Quran the opening session of the extended meeting was held before closed-door session of the delegates from all over the country.

BNP’s last extended meeting was called by party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia on February 3, 2018. After that meeting, Khaleda Zia was sent to jail on February 8 in a case.

Executive committee members of different units of the party and candidates in the 11th Jatiya Sangsad elections and their rivals were invited at the extended meeting.
