BGB brings back 29 fishermen from Arakan Army's custody

DHAKA, Feb 27, 2025 (BSS) - Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has brought back 29 fishermen including 15 Bangladeshi nationals and 14
 Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN) from the custody of Myanmar's armed rebel group Arakan Army.

 The Arakan Army handed over 29 fishermen and a boatman held hostage by them to BGB Teknaf Battalion at the zero line of the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in the Naf River adjacent to Shahparirdwip on Thursday afternoon, said a BGB press release signed by Lt. Col. Ashikur Rahman, PSCCommander Teknaf Battalion (2 BGB).

The 15 Bangladeshi fishermen were released from the custody of the Arakan Army with the efforts and mediation of the BGB's Teknaf Battalion (2 BGB).

The BGB personnel later brought them to Teknaf Jetty Ghat in a trawler.

The Bangladeshi citizens returned from the Arakan Army are: Md. Hasan (30), son of the deceased Tayyab of Teknaf's Shahparirdwip, Md. Jabed (18), son of Md. Salimullah, Md. A. Rahim (17), son of Kabir Ahmed, Md. Hasan (19), son of the deceased Alam, Md. Kala Mia (37), son of Md. Syed Alam, Md. Nurul Alam (39), son of Shamsul Alam, Abdur Rahman (19), son of Sultan Ahmed, Md. Kalam Ahmed (29), son of Faizal Karim, Md. Laila (11), son of Abdul Amin, Md. Kabir Ahmed (43), son of Kabir Ahmed, Mohammad Yunus (23), son of Sonamiya, Nurul Islam (34), son of Rashid Ahmed, Md. Lutfar Rahman (23), son of Abdul Mannan, Rahim Ullah (21) and son of Nur Mohammad, Md. Faisal.

While the 14 FDMN members are : Faruk Majhi, son of Nur Salam of No. 8 (East) Balukhali FDMN Camp, Kefayet Ullah, son of Ikram of No. 25 Alikhali FDMN Camp, Md. Ibrahim, son of Nazir Hossain of No. 7 Kutupalong FDMN Camp, Abdul Monaf, son of Dalijan of No. 13 Balukhali FDMN Camp, Tayyab Ali, son of Hoshon Ali, Syed Ullah Majhi, son of Md. Salam, Syed Alam, son of Nur Mohammad, Imam Hossain, son of Nur Mohammad, Md. Hoshon Ahmed, son of Thanda Mia, Nezamuddin (30) son of Hoshon Ahmed, Aman Ullah (32) son of Nur Mohammad, Sonamia's son Nur Hoshon, Kabir Ahmed, son of the late Abdus Salam and Hamid, son of the late Maqbul Ahmed Hossain.

The process of handing over the returned fishermen to their families is ongoing.

Earlier on February 11 and 20 last, fishermen from Teknaf's KK Canal, Shahparidwip Trawler Ghat and Kharangkhali areas were fishing in the Naf River and the Bay of Bengal with 6 engine-powered boats, the press release said.

While fishing, they accidentally crossed the zero line of the Bangladesh-Myanmar border and entered Myanmar's waters.

After that, members of the Myanmar Arakan Army detained them along with the boat for illegal intrusion, it said.

When the families of the fishermen held hostage by the Arakan Army sought BGB intervention to bring them back, the Teknaf Battalion (2 BGB) of the BGB established effective communication with the Arakan Army.

After a long mediation, the Teknaf Battalion of the BGB was able to bring back the fishermen held hostage by the Arakan Army Thursday afternoon.
