DHAKA, March 1, 2025 (BSS) – Bangladesh is going through a new era of cultural reawakening with countrywide diverse and creative events, arrangement of band music, baul song programme, dance, theater, films and virtual reality exhibitions.
The Ministry of Cultural Affairs recently created a wonderful ‘communication material’ on the recognition of British magazine Economist to Bangladesh as “Country of The Year”, brightening the government’s positive image at home and abroad.
Number of Sadhu Sanghas, association of the Bauls, has been increased to 24 from 12, officials of the cultural ministry said.
Ekushey Padak, country’s second highest civilian award was not just given as honour only, but manifested the political and cultural philosophy of the government, connecting the nation’s heritage and conscience with cultural development.
Official sources said the cultural resurgence are particularly seen in the activities of the public entities which responsible for promoting cultural arena.
The governing body of the National Museum has been restructured under the leadership of internationally renowned architect Marina Tabassum.
It is planned to transform it into a modern and functional museum within the next three years to attract domestic and foreign visitors, officials said.
They said filmmaking workshops are being arranged across the country under the ‘Remembering Monsoon Revolution’ programme aimed at making medium-length films. Those films will play an important role in establishing ‘July Narrative’.
In addition, eight new dramas are being made by eight theatre groups, which will similarly highlight the July history in a new way, they said.
Steps were taken for promotion of Nazrul Sangeet. Rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam has been made relevant in the nations thought and progress.
To reach Nazrul’s songs to the new generation, a special rock album is being made by leading rock bands under the initiative of the Nazrul Institute. The album will be launched with a colorful concert at Manik Mia Avenue on Pahela Baishakh.
The government has also taken initiative for adoption of a new cultural policy and expansion of creative economy in this field in line with the cultural policy across the world. The draft of the new cultural policy will be shared with the stakeholders to incorporate their opinions.
Work is underway to constitute a committee to transform Bangla Academy into a more effective and participatory institution. This committee will be formed by the first week of March, comprising senior and young writers, researchers and intellectuals.
A long-term plan has been taken to develop Cox's Bazar as an important cultural hub, for which a concept note is being prepared. In addition, a plan has been taken for the renovation and revitalization of the traditional Panam City at Sonargaon by declaring it as the cultural capital of the country.
This year, a two-day special programme marking the Silver Jubilee of the International Mother Language Day was held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. A cultural troupe of senior and junior artistes of Bangladesh took part in the programme.
Lalon sangeet, rap songs, and immortal song on Ekushey ‘Amar Bhaiyer Rakte Rangano’ were performed in four languages on this world stage of UNESCO.
This new journey of Bangladesh's culture and creativity will further enrich our heritage and create a new identity in the world, officials hoped.
