KHULNA, March 08, 2025 (BSS) - The authorities of Khulna University (KU) have been implementing a series of initiatives to honour the memory of Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho, a student of the university's Mathematics Discipline who embraced martyrdom on July 18 during the July uprising last year.
Following ouster of Shiekh Hasina on August 5 at the cost of thousands of lives, KU students handed over a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Md Rezaul Karim inscribing five point demands.
The university authorities have begun to realize their demands that include announcing and observing July 18 as 'Shaheed Mir Mugdho Day' every year, renaming of the university's main gate as 'Shaheed Mir Mugdho Gate', enacting a monument or memorial plaque in front of the TSC building in his memory, lodging an appeal to the government demanding justice for his killing and establishing a 'July 2024 Massacre Memorial Corner' at the KU Museum to honour all the martyrs.
Commemorating sacrifice of Mugdho, the university's highest policy-making forum, the Syndicate, at its 230th meeting held on February 8, renamed the university's main gate as 'Shaheed Mir Mugdho Gate'.
Besides, this year's inter-discipline football tournament, organized by the student-run KU Football Club, was named after Mir Mugdho.
On November 17, 2024, the English Discipline set up a 'Mughdo Water Corner' on the second floor of Academic Building No 3.
Talking to the BSS, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Md Rezaul Karim highlighted significance of Mugdho's sacrifice in shaping a new Bangladesh.
"Shaheed Mir Mugdho and others like him have contributed immensely to the creation of a fresh version of the nation. Their sacrifices have given us new hope. It is now our responsibility to realize their dreams."
He added that all the demands placed by the students were approved in the 230th syndicate meeting of the university.
From now on, 'Shaheed Mir Mugdho Day' will be observed on July 18 every year. A memorial plaque will be erected in front of the TSC building in commemoration of Mugdho and a 'July 2024 Massacre Memorial Corner' will be established in the KU Museum in memories of the July uprising martyrs, noted the Vice Chancellor.
Besides, the university authorities have decided to formally appeal to the government demanding justice for Mir Mugdho's killing.
Mugdho was tragically shot dead on July 18, 2024, in the capital while actively participating in the anti-discrimination student movement.
Till his last breathe, Mughdo was seen providing water to exhausted protesters, and his last words, "Brother, do you need water? (Pani lagbe pani?" became a lasting symbol of his selflessness and dedication.
Mugdho was not only a brilliant student but also a beloved figure at KU, known for his academic excellence and involvement in extracurricular activities. His infectious smile and positive presence were cherished by all who knew him.
