DHAKA, March 15, 2025 (BSS) - Dhaka University (DU) will remain closed on Sunday to mourn the passing of former Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique.
A press release issued by DU's public relations office director, Rafiqul Islam, on Saturday stated that the decision was made in accordance with university traditions to honor and pay respects to the late professor.
In line with customary practices following the death of a former vice-chancellor, the university held public announcements on campus, issued condolence messages, conducted special prayers at the central mosque, and observed other traditional rituals, the release added.
"The university administration also expressed respect for the family's wishes regarding the funeral and burial arrangements."
The press release further mentioned that current Vice Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan visited Prof Arefin Siddique on March 7 at the Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital's Neuroscience Unit, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). During his treatment, the university administration maintained regular contact with his family, friends, and colleagues.
Following his passing, Prof Niaz Ahmed and other university officials attended the funeral and burial.
Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, former Vice Chancellor and Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism at DU, passed away at around 10:45pm last Thursday at the age of 71 while undergoing treatment.
He was laid to eternal rest at the Azimpur graveyard in the capital on Friday afternoon.
