DHAKA, March 24, 2025 (BSS) - Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhtar today said development of integrated fisheries and livestock management is feasible in Sandwip, thanks to its abundant resources.

She also highlighted the significant potential for fish farming, as well as buffalo and sheep farming in the region, saying the government is actively working to enhance the fisheries and livestock sectors across the country.

The adviser made the remarks at a meeting with women members of various PG groups from the upazila at the Sandwip Upazila Parishad conference room, said a ministry press release. She also visited fish farms.

She mentioned that both fisheries and livestock sectors have to pay electricity bills at commercial rates, but agriculture enjoys a subsidized electricity rate.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock is working towards ensuring that farmers in the fisheries and livestock sectors also receive subsidized electricity rates, similar to those in agriculture, she added.

The adviser further revealed that a Fisheries and Livestock Development Bank is being established to provide farmers with easier access to loans and financial support on favorable terms.

Officials concerned in divisions, districts and upazilas attended the meeting.

Earlier, the Adviser also participated as a special guest at the inauguration of the ferry service on the Banshbaria-Sitakunda-Guptachhara-Sandwip route in Chattogram district.
