CHATTOGRAM, April 11, 2025 (BSS) – Power, energy and mineral resources, and railways adviser Dr. Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan said if there is any load shedding in the coming summer, the capital city Dhaka will experience first the bite and then other parts of the country.
Mentioning that uninterrupted power supply depends on many factors, he said only villagers will not suffer for power load shedding like in the past but the government is trying its best to reduce load shedding during the coming summer season.
Fouzul Kabir Khan said these while responding to a question from a journalist about load shedding in the coming summer at a press briefing held at the conference room of the Bangladesh Railway (Eastern Zone) here this evening .
The advisor said that power outage can take place for two reasons— shortfall in production and if the line remains closed.
“Load shedding occurs due to mismatch in the supply and demand but if transformer goes out of order or any technical glitch is created due to storms or rains, and then power outage takes place. When the temperature rises, the demand for electricity goes up. For this, we have asked affluent consumers to keep the AC temperature at 25 degrees. If this can be maintained, one to two thousand megawatts will be saved,” he added.
The adviser said there is some visible progress in reducing water-logging problem of the port city as government is working to free the port city people from this persistent problem by putting utmost importance with involvement of all service and utility providing organizations.
Emphasizing the need for active cooperation of city dwellers, the adviser said the government alone cannot solve the problem.
Dr Fouzul Kabir Khan said the government is actively considering to expand the accident-prone Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway into six lanes but it will take at least 2-3 years.
“But it is time-consuming. Land acquisition and compensation will have to be paid here. However, some initiatives have been taken to prevent road accidents. The road has been widened in the risky part. Warning sign posts have been put up at import sections to increase public awareness as well as to aware the drivers”, he said.
A senior official of Roads and Highways Department told the meeting that feasibility study work is underway to upgrade the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway to six lanes. It will be completed next September. Then the DPP will be formulated in December. A loan agreement is scheduled to be signed with the Japan’s JICA next January.
