DHAKA, April 20, 2025 (BSS) - Justice of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court Farah Mahbub today said that women have been joining in legal profession defying barriers.
“The establishment of people’s desires, freedom of speech, personal rights and right of access to justice are the most important for flourishing of democracy,” she said while addressing a reception accorded to the newly promoted two judges of the Appellate Division at the Supreme Court here.
“My first lesson in the legal profession was begun with my father Advocate Mahbubur Rahman who was a well-known lawyer of the Supreme Court and his prominent role in the arena of judiciary that had helped develop a relationship between the legal affairs and me,” said Farah Mahbub.
“I joined the judiciary as a judge on August 23 in 2004 and as a junior of Justice Anwarul Haque, I got a chance to learn about court management, explanation of law and techniques for writing of judgment,” she said, adding that at that time he (Anwarul Haque) taught me how to ensure the legal services to the justice-seekers in better ways.
“Once there was conception in the common people that the legal profession is not for the women but now the women are spontaneously joining in this profession defying barriers,” Justice Farah Mahbub said. There are significant number of women lawyers in the country and nearly 35 percent women judges in the judicial service have been performing their duties with enough efficiency, she added.
“The increase in the number of women judges is not only for women empowerment but also for ensuring access to justice for all,” she said. There are many cases in the country where the victim and justice-seekers are women and in those cases, if there is a women judge that can be satisfactory for the victims and justice-seekers, which also will help to make the judiciary people-friendly and gender-friendly as well, she added.
The Attorney General Office and the Supreme Court Bar Association today accorded reception to the newly appointed Appellate Division judges Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Farah Mahbub at a court room of the Supreme Court.
