DHAKA, Jan 20, 2022 (BSS) - The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) has arrested a gang of international ATM card-cloning racket from the city's Gulshan-1 area.
"Our team has nabbed two members including its ringleader of an international ATM card-cloning syndicate and seized cards and laptops from them," Additional commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Chief of the CTTC Md Asaduzzaman said here today.
He said the arrestees are Hakan Zanburkan, 55, a Turkish national, along with his Bangladeshi accomplice Md Mafiul Islam.
Hakan with the help of Mafiul made 84 attempts to withdraw money from ATM booths of Eastern Bank in different parts of the capital with foreign-cloned ATM cards, but failed as the booths were equipped with scanning software, the CTTC chief said.
Asaduzzaman said that he used cloned ATM cards of around 40 countries including Australia, New Zealand, the USA, India, Turkey, the Saudi Arabia, Austria, Germany, Vietnam, the UK, Canada, Bolivia, Spain, Finland and Norway during the attempt.
He said that Hakan and another Turkey national along with two Bangladeshi citizens were arrested in another ATM booth scanning case filed with Paltanbazar Police Station Assam province of India in 2019.
Earlier, detained in Assam, he and his associates withdrew some RS 10 lakh from different booths in India using cloned ATM cards.
He also fled from Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital during facing imprisonment of 20 months in Agartala there.
