DHAKA, July 2, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam today stressed the need for a highly skilled and professional diplomatic corps to effectively advance Bangladesh's national interests under the "Bangladesh First" policy.
She highlighted this need while addressing the certificate awarding ceremony of the Refreshers' Course for Directors 2026 as the chief guest at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital.
The State Minister underscored the importance of equipping diplomats with deeper expertise in key national priority areas, including climate change, transboundary water sharing, migration, free trade agreements, peacekeeping and peacebuilding, and the Rohingya issue, among others.
Speaking as the special guest, Secretary (East and West) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam highlighted the importance of the refresher course in strengthening the professional competencies of mid-career diplomats.
He said the training programme equips diplomats with the knowledge and skills required to address evolving global and diplomatic challenges.
Rector of the Foreign Service Academy Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith delivered the welcome address.
He said modern-day diplomats must be analytical, adaptable, composed and ethical, reaffirming the Academy's commitment to producing highly professional diplomats through continuous training.
The Foreign Service Academy organises the Refreshers' Course annually as part of its continuing professional development programme.
This year, 13 directors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs successfully completed the course and received certificates at the ceremony.
Senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Foreign Service Academy, along with resource persons, were also present at the event.
