“Five children died with measles symptoms in the past 24 hours while three of the deaths have been reported from Dhaka division, which appeared to be the region with highest number of measles inflictions and subsequent deaths,” a DGHS spokesman said.

He said during the period counted from 8 AM of Wednesday to 8 AM today 1,119 new measles cases were reported while laboratory tests confirmed 154 of the patients were inflicted by disease, one of the most contagious diseases known to humans.

The latest DGHS bulletin, meanwhile, said until today the confirmed and suspected measles cases claimed 724 lives since March 15 this year when the official tracking of the disease started.

Since then, it said 102,993 children were detected with measles symptoms and laboratory tests confirmed the disease.

According to experts and measles literature if one person with measles could inflict up to 9 out of 10 unvaccinated children who come to his or her close contact while the measles virus could linger in the air and on surfaces for up to 2 hours after an infected person leaves a room.

According to the DGHS since March 15, a total of 86,411 suspected measles patients were admitted to hospitals and 82,759 recovered.
