Natural disasters: Latest situation in districts, govt response

DHAKA, Aug 21, 2026 (BSS) - The overall situation arising from flash floods, landslides and hill slides in several southeastern and northeastern districts of the country has improved, with conditions returning to normal in many areas.

Government agencies and local administration offices are continuing public awareness campaigns and other measures to minimise risks and protect people in affected and vulnerable areas, said a PID press release today.

The latest information was compiled from reports submitted by district and upazila information offices under the Department of Mass Communication, as well as regional offices of the Press Information Department under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

According to the reports, 15 upazilas of Chattogram, including the city, have been inundated by floodwaters. The situation is more severe in Satkania, Banshkhali, Lohagara, Chandanaish, Boalkhali and Sandwip. The District Information Office is continuing awareness activities during and after the flood.

In Habiganj, the flood situation has returned to normal in all upazilas. No families remain waterlogged, while no casualties, hill slides or landslides have been reported. The district recorded 12mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, and awareness campaigns are continuing.

In Khagrachhari, no excessive rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours and no new hill slides occurred. Floodwaters have receded from most areas, although normal conditions have not yet been fully restored. River and stream water levels remain below danger marks. 

Authorities are continuing to disseminate messages on hill-slide risks, floods and post-flood safety measures.

The overall situation in Cox's Bazar has improved and is currently normal. No rainfall was recorded during the last 24 hours. Loudspeaker announcements are being conducted to alert people about health risks and other hazards during the post-flood period.

In Moulvibazar, the flood situation is gradually improving. Flash floods damaged crops on 57 hectares of land in the district. The District Information Office is continuing awareness campaigns.

The situation in Rangamati is reported to be completely normal. Since the beginning of the heavy rainfall, the District Information Office has been conducting road campaigns to encourage residents in hill-slide-prone areas to move to safer shelters.

In Bandarban, the disaster situation is currently normal. Less than 10mm of rain was recorded in the last 24 hours, while water levels in the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers remain below danger levels.

Floodwaters have receded and people are returning home from shelters. Awareness campaigns and film screenings on hill slides, floods and post-flood safety measures are continuing.

The weather situation in Lama is also normal, with no rainfall recorded since morning. No flooding, hill slides or landslides have been reported, and the Matamuhuri River is flowing well below the danger level. The local information office's flood-related awareness campaign has received a positive response.

In Ramgarh, the situation is currently normal. Light rain has occurred in some areas under the influence of the seasonal monsoon, while the Feni River rose somewhat following prolonged heavy rainfall. However, there is no current risk of flooding and no new hill slides have been reported.

The Ramgarh Information Office has conducted road campaigns and loudspeaker announcements urging people to avoid unsafe houses damaged by floods or heavy rain, maintain hygiene, prevent snake bites, protect children, women, elderly people and persons with disabilities, avoid exchanging money for relief, stay away from electric poles and wires, and prevent dengue by not allowing water to accumulate.

In Patiya, no hill slides or landslides have been reported. Public awareness campaigns on post-flood safety measures and the prevention of dengue and chikungunya are continuing.

Meanwhile, the weather in Kaptai, Rajasthali and Bilaichhari is expected to remain normal today, according to the latest report from the local information office.

Authorities and information offices across the affected districts are continuing monitoring and public awareness activities to ensure timely action against any deterioration in the disaster situation.
