Sufia Kamal was powerful voice against social disparity: speakers

DHAKA, June 20, 2021 (BSS) – Speakers at a virtual memorial lecture on Poet Sufia Kamal said the legendary woman was a fearless warrior and powerful voice against communalism, social barriers, injustice and discrimination.
 
“Sufia Kamal raised her voice against all sorts of injustices and discriminations,” Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) General Secretary Maleka Banu told the webinar marking the 110th birth anniversary of poet Sufia Kamal.
 
She said Sufia Kamal, also founding president of BMP, was a devotee of spearheading movement for emancipation of human beings.
 
Rabindra University Vice-Chancellor Prof Biswajit Ghosh delivered a memorial lecture titled “Sufia Kamal and Bangladesh’s women movement” with BMP President Dr Fauzia Moslem in the chair.
 
Journalist, teacher, politician and right activist Nurjahan Murshid and Kumudini Welfare Trust were given Poet Sufia Kamal honorary award-2020 on the occasion.
 
BMC Joint General Secretary Shima Moslem and Organizing Secretary Umme Salma Begum moderated the programme.
 
In his lecture, Prof Ghosh said Sufia Kamal was one of the pioneers of women rights movement in the country.
 
She remains as the source of inspiration for struggles against social barriers and discriminations, he said.
 
Dr Fauzia Moslem said Bangladesh Mahila Parishad always follows the ideology and path shown by iconic figure Sufia Kamal in raising voice for establishing women rights.
 
Though the women are making their marks in every sphere of life, the patriarchal mindset is yet to be changed, she said, adding that the movement should be continued to this end.
 
She underscored the need for making united efforts by organizations which believe in equity for all to eliminate all kinds of discriminatory approaches towards women.
 
Rabindra Sangeet singer Iffat Ara Dewan and Nazrul Sangeet singer Khairul Anam Shakil performed songs during the programme.
