DHAKA, Aug 22, 2026 (BSS)- Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and Social Welfare Minister Abu Zafar Md Zahid Hossain today visited Professor Dr Md Asadur Rahman at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), who was injured in an attack of miscreants in the city recently.

The ministers visited the hospital around 4:15pm and inquired about the physical condition of Dr Asad, head of the ENT Department at DMCH.

They also talked to the attending doctors about the progress of Asad’s treatment and wished him a speedy recovery. The ministers assured him of giving all necessary assistance for treatment.

Dr Asad was seriously injured in an attack by a group of criminals in front of Popular Diagnostic Centre at Shantinagar in the city several days ago. He is currently undergoing treatment at DMCH.

After visiting Dr Asad, the home minister told journalists that a coordinated group was carrying out planned attacks targeting prominent professionals, including leading doctors.

Several criminals were arrested in connection with the incident, he said adding the main planner behind the attack was arrested within 48 hours of the incident while another was arrested from Lakshmipur.

Salahuddin thanked and praised the police and Detective Branch (DB) for their efforts, but said more work remained to be done.

“We will eliminate all organised extortionists from the country, particularly those operating in the metro and DMP (Dhaka Metropolitan Police) areas,” he said.

Action would also be taken against officials who would fail to bring such criminals under control quickly, he warned.

The home minister said in police interrogation the main accused confessed that he had previously lived abroad and was involved in hundi business, where he suffered financial losses. Subsequently he formed an organised group and targeted prominent individuals, including doctors and engineers, for extortion, the minister said.

“I am not only preparing a list of extortionists; I am also preparing a list of police personnel who may be involved with them,” Salahuddin said.

Asked about the cancellation of a police concert in Brahmanbaria, the home minister said people in that area traditionally do not like such music and entertainment programmes.
