BNP opposes formation of EC and holding elections: Razzaque

TANGAIL, Feb 27, 2022 (BSS) – Agriculture Minister Dr M Abdur Razzaque today said sensing sure defeat in the upcoming national election, the BNP has taken the odd path of opposing Election Commission (EC) and the election as well.

“The BNP does not want the formation of EC and holding of elections as well …the BNP knows it well that they have no soil under their feet,” he said.

The minister made the remarks while exchanging views with journalists on Basail upazila premises here this morning.

Dr Razzaque said BNP supremo Khaleda Zia is convicted in corruption cases, so she is not eligible for participating in the elections, BNP’s another leader Tarique Rahman is in exile, so to take part in elections for Tarique Rahman is not easy.

So, the BNP never favoured elections in the country, said Razzaque, adding that “They (BNP) want ouster of the government.”

But the government is elected by the people, so, the government won’t be removed until the mandate goes against it, he told the newsman.

Regarding the formation of election commission, the minister said the President has formed the EC as per the law. “The image of those who got appointments as the CEC and ECs is very bright as they have performed their duties in the past with success and efficiency and so far I know they have no political identities,” said the minister.

After formation of the EC, he said the controversy about the fairness of the EC has been significantly reduced. A peaceful environment has been prepared and people are thinking that a fair and acceptable election will be held through the commission, he added.

As per the law, President M Abdul Hamid formed the EC on Saturday, so there is nothing that the BNP would reject the EC, said the ruling party leader.

The BNP will never be able to stop the next election by issuing threat of staging movement as the ruling party activists are fully prepared to face their movement, the minister noted.
