SAVAR, April 12, 2022 (BSS) - Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) today staged demonstrations on the campus protesting the harassment and beating of a JU teacher by North South University (NU) students.
Over hundred students of the university formed a human chain at the premises of the university’s central Shaheed Minar protesting the incident of beating one of their teachers.
They demanded exemplary punishment to the NSU students-who beat up a JU teacher. They also warned of a stringent movement from JU students if the incident is not brought to proper justice.
Earlier, on Monday some NSU students beat up a Jahangirnagar University teacher at Bashundhara residential area over an allegation of sexually harassing one of their female fellows at a coffee shop in the capital.
According to witnesses, over 15 NSU students started beating the JU teacher—who is also a fellow faculty member at North South University, at the coffee shop and rebuked the teacher while he tried to run away.
Meanwhile, the students filmed the moment of seeking mercy to the female student by the teacher at a road outside the ‘Arabic Coffee Shop at Bashundhara residential area and posted photos, videos on social media Facebook.
Later, the students took the teacher to the NSU Proctor office and filed a complaint over the sexual harassment.
NSU Proctor Abu Noman Mohammad Atahar Ali received the complaint and pronounced sacking the teacher from all three courses which he used to conduct, quoting the registrar office.
While contacted, the teacher said that the female students were trying to contact him over phone and messages for the past few days and repeatedly asking about personal matters such as his marital status.
‘The student repeatedly called me to hold a lecture on a topic that I conducted earlier. Later, I said that it is impossible for me to take the class further at NSU. However, I referred her to JU campus if she had an emergency’, the alleged teacher claimed.
Terming the incident as ‘pre-planned and fishy’, he said, ‘The student invited me at the coffee shop and I scheduled her a meet up while going shopping this day. If I had any bad intentions, I wouldn't go to the coffee shop.’
The teacher also said that the students snatched his moneybag, forced him to acknowledge the allegation in front of camera and he was preparing to file a case against the students.
The phones of the female NSU student and her friends-who beat up the teacher, were found switched off.
Besides, the registrar office of the NSU did not respond to any query over email and did not pick up the phone once after asking about the matter.
