RAJSHAHI, June 2, 2022 (BSS) - Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni has said 
utmost emphasis should be given on research in universities because 
innovation can only be possible through conducting research. 

"Universities both public and private should be turned into hubs of research 
for generating knowledgeable and competent nation-building workforces," she 
added. 

The Education Minister came up with the observation while presiding over the 
first convocation of Varendra University, Rajshahi at its campus here today.

Rajshahi Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton addressed the ceremony as special 
guest, while Asaduzzaman Noor, MP, delivered the convocation speech.

Saifuzzaman Shekhar, MP, UGC Member Professor Biswajit Chanda, former vice-
chancellor of Rajshahi University Professor Saidur Rahman Khan and Varendra 
University Vice-chancellor Professor Osman Gani Talukder also spoke.

Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has 
attached priority to science education. So, a number of science and 
technology universities were established in different parts of the country.

She also said the present government has established more other technical 
institutions in district level even in the upazila level for expanding 
technical and vocational education.  

Around 3,500 graduates of nine departments of the private university joined 
the convocation. 

In the convocation, two students were given 'Chancellor Gold Medal', while 
nine others 'Vice-chancellor Gold Medal' as recognition for the laudable 
academic performance.
