CHATTOGRAM, July 27, 2022 (BSS) - The Divisional Special Judge Court of Chattogram today sentenced 20 years jail to sacked officer-in-charge (OC), Teknaf, Pradip Kumar Das and 21 years to his wife Chumki Karon in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for amassing illegal wealth and concealing information.
The court also fined Tk 4 crore 11 lakh each and instructed the concerned department to seize all of their assets in favour of the state.
Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Munshi Abdul Majid passed the order in a crowded court in presence of the convicted couple.
The ACC filed the case with its Chattogram Intergraded Office-1, against Pradip and Chumki on Aug 23, 2020 for amassing wealth worth around Tk 4 crore from unknown sources.
Assistant Director of the ACC Md Reaz Uddin ACC submitted the charge sheet before the court on July 26 in 2021 after investigating into the case.
The same court earlier framed charges against Pradip and his wife in the ACC case for illegally amassing wealth in December 15, 2021 and ordered the authorities to issue an arrest warrant against Chumki.
Chumki surrendered before the court on May 23 last and sought bail but the court rejected her bail petition.
Meanwhile, sacked OC Pradip had been awarded death penalty on January 31 over the murder of retired army major Sinha Md Rashed Khan in Cox’s Bazar.
Police shot and killed retired army officer Sinha in an egregious abuse of their authority in Cox’s Bazar on July 31 in 2020 that sparked a public outcry all over the country.
