SAVAR, Oct 18, 2022 (BSS)- The authorities of Jahangirnagar University (JU) today observed “Sheikh Russel Day”, marking the 59th birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's youngest son Shaheed Sheikh Russel.
Sheikh Russel, also the youngest brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi road number 32 in Dhaka.
But he was brutally killed along with most of his family members, including his father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on August 15, 1975 when he was a student of class four only at University Laboratory School.
Marking the day, a tree plantation programme was arranged at 'Sritibrikko' garden of the university at around 9.30 am.
JU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nurul Alam addressed the program as chief guest and planted tree saplings.
Later, an art competition for the children was also organized at the Zahir Raihan auditorium of the university at 10am.
A milad and doa mahfil was organized at the central mosque and all other mosques on the university campus after Asr prayer seeking eternal peace of the departed soul of Shaheed Sheikh Russel.
Besides, the JU unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) organized various programmes to mark the day.
They arranged a milad and doa mahfil at the central mosque of the university aftar Asr prayer. JU unit BCL President Akhtaruzzaman Sohel, General Secretary Habibur Rahman Liton and over 300 leaders and activists were present at the programme.
A special munajat was also offered seeking eternal peace of the departed soul of Sheikh Russell as well as Bangabandhu and other martyred of the August 15 carnage.
Besides, they distributed educational materials among the unprivileged children at central cafeteria on the occasion of the day.
