RANGPUR, Oct 18, 2022 (BSS) -The authority of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) today celebrated Sheikh Russell Day-2022 marking the 59th birthday of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with due dignity.
Vice-Chancellor of the university Professor Dr. Md. Hasibur Rashid inaugurated the daylong programmes through hoisting the national flag at 9 am.
After that, he led a colorful procession from the administrative building to Sheikh Russell Square on the campus.
Later, the Vice-chancellor with Pro Vice-chancellor Professor Dr. Sarifa Salwa Dina and Treasurer Professor Dr. Mojib Uddin Ahamed paid tributes to the portrait of Sheikh Russel installed there.
Professor Rashid also planted a sapling in front of Academic Building-4 to commemorate the memory of martyred Sheikh Russel.
Participating as chief guest at a virtual discussion arranged marking the day; Professor Rashid said Sheikh Russel is a symbol of building a bright life for neglected, backward and deprived children and adolescents.
“The new generation will learn a lot by researching little Russel's personality, humanity and ready wit,” he said, and called upon teachers and students to conduct research on Sheikh Russel.
Speaking as a special guest, Professor Dr. Dina said the fate of child Sheikh Russel through the most brutal murder in history on August 15, 1975 should never happen to any other child in the world.
“If the judgment of the trial of the murderers of August 15, 1975 is fully implemented, the stain of the history will be removed,” she mentioned.
Professor Dr. Mojib said that if Sheikh Russel was alive today, he would have been in the first line in the struggle to advance Bangladesh as a talented person.
“The killers of Bangabandhu and their accomplices are still active in the conspiracy to push back the country,” he said, and called upon everyone to be vigilant about them.
Convener of Sheikh Russel Day Celebration Committee-2022, Professor Dr. Kamlesh Chandra Roy presided over the discussion moderated by General Secretary of the Teachers’ Association of BRUR Syed Anwarul Azim.
Among others, Registrar of BRUR Engineer Md. Alamgir Chowdhury, Associate Professor of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems Dr. Apple Mahmud, Director (In-charge) of the Office of the Student Affairs Md Nuruzzaman Khan, Deputy Director of the Public Relations, Information and Publication Division Mohammad Ali, addressed.
After the Zuhr prayers, a doa mehfil followed by offering special munajats was organized at the central mosque of the university seeking divine blessings for the departed soul of Sheikh Russel and all martyrs of August 15, 1975.
