NEW DELHI, Oct 18, 2022 (BSS) - Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi today celebrated the Sheikh Russel Day in a befitting manner marking the 59th birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's youngest son Shaheed Sheikh Russel.
To mark the day, the high commission organized children and juvenile art competition along with screening a documentary on Sheikh Russel, who was brutally killed at the fateful night of August 15, 1975 along with Bangabandhu and most of his family members.
The day's programmes began with placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu and Sheikh Russel and concluded after offering a munajat seeking divine blessings of Shaheed Russel and peace, progress and prosperity of the country.
A discussion on life of Sheikh Russel was organized after reading out messages from President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina marking the occasion.
The newly appointed High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India Md. Mustafizur Rahman and Minister (Press) Shaban Mahmood took part in the discussion.
Later, the high commissioner along with his spouse and children of officers, employees and staff cut a cake marking the day.
A video message of Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian social reformer and a champion of campaigning against child labour and establishing their rights of education, was screened on the occasion.
The day was also celebrated at Bangladesh deputy and assistant missions in Kolkata, Mumbai, Agartala and Guwahati in a befitting manner.
Sheikh Russel, also the youngest brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi road number 32 in the capital.
