DHAKA, Nov 3, 2022 (BSS) - The High Court (HC) today upheld the death
sentence of three convicts in a case lodged over the sensational murder of
Himadri Majumder Himu in 2012.
A High Court Division bench of Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Justice
Khandaker Diliruzzaman pronounced the judgement after holding hearing on
death reference and jail appeals in the case.
The three convicts, whose death sentences have been upheld are-- Mahboob Ali
Khan Danny, Zahedul Islam Shawon and Junaid Ahmed Riad. The court, however,
acquitted Riad's father Shah Selim Tipu and Shahadat Hossain Shaju from the
case.
Himu, an A-level student of Summerfield School and College in Chattogram, was
involved with an anti-drug social organisation "Shikor".
According to the case documents, Shawon, Riad, Shaju and Danny forcibly took
Himu to the rooftop four-storey building of Tipu on April 27, 2012. There
they unleashed three ferocious dogs of Riad on Himu. Later, they pushed Himu
off the building, leaving him seriously injured. Himu died of his injuries in
hospital on May 23.
Himu's uncle Prokash Das filed the case with Panchlaish Police Station.
Police on October 30, 2012, filed charge-sheet against the five accused and
Chattogram fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Nurul Islam on
August 14, 2016, convicted and sentenced five men to death.
The lower court concerned later sent the death reference and appeal petitions
to the High Court for its approval. Of the five, Shawon and Riad are yet to
be arrested and were tried in absentia.
