DMP allocates Suhrawardy Udyan for BNP's rally as a convenient venue: Kamal

HABIGANJ, Dec 3, 2022 (BSS) - Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal today said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner has allotted the Suhrawardy Udyan for BNP's rally for their convenience as the party said that many people will gather there on December 10.

"All political and social organizations, including Awami League (AL), hold public rallies at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city. Therefore, police commissioner allotted the venue for BNP's rally for their convenience as the party said that many people will gather there," he said.

The home minister made the remarks replying to a question from journalists after inaugurating the newly constructed Shayestaganj Police Station Complex here in the afternoon.

The date of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) council has already been rescheduled for BNP's rally, Kamal said, adding, but BNP did not accept it.

If they (BNP men) gather in front of their party office at Naya Paltan without complying with the prohibition of the police commissioner, he (police commissioner) will take necessary action in this regard, the minister said.

The police commissioner will take all necessary steps to keep Dhaka city functioning and law and order normal, he added.

BNP requested the police commissioner for allocating the front side of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) and Suhrawardy Udyan to hold a rally, the minister said, adding that Sangsad Bhaban area can't be logically allocated.

Various organizations including Awami League hold programmes at the Suhrawardy Udyan while different social gatherings, waj mahfils and gatherings of freedom fighters are also taken place there, Kamal said.

Chhatra League's council has been rescheduled by bringing the date two days ahead to give BNP an opportunity to hold the rally there, he added.

Kamal, later, addressed a citizens' rally as the chief guest with Habiganj Superintendent of Police SM Murad Ali in the chair.

State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Md Mahbub Ali, Habiganj district Awami League (AL) President Advocate Md Abu Zahir, lawmaker Md Abdul Majid Khan, DIG of Sylhet Range Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, Habiganj District Council Chairman Dr Mushfiq Hossain Chowdhury and Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ishrat Jahan, district AL General Secretary Advocate Alamgir Chowdhury and Shayestaganj Upazila Chairman Abdur Rashid Talukder spoke at the function as special guests.

Habiganj Public Works Department constructed the new four-storey building of Shayestaganj Police Station on a six-storey foundation on 1.57 acres of land at the cost of Taka 8.40 crore.

After the citizens' rally, the home minister went around the newly constructed building and planted a sapling of mango tree in front of the newly constructed Police Station Complex.
