HC grants anticipatory bail to 23 accused in Ijtema ground clash

DHAKA, Jan 8, 2025 (BSS) - The High Court (HC) today granted anticipatory bail to Maulana Saad’s followers Syed Wasiful Islam and 22 others in a case over the recent clashes at Tongi Ijtema ground resulting to deaths of few pilgrims.

The HC bench comprising Justice Mohammad Mahbub-ul-Islam and Justice Md Hamidur Rahman granted the bail till submission of police report when the accused appeared before the court and sought bail. 

Senior lawyer of the Supreme Court  (SC) Abdullah Al-Mamun moved for the petitioners.

Advocate Abdullah Al-Mamun, after the bail order, told the journalists that of the accused there are many senior citizens including former secretary and university professors. The High Court also instructed the followers of Tableague Jamaat to run their activities unitedly.

One S M Alam, a follower of Maulana Jubair, filed a case with Tongi West Thana mentioning the names of 29 followers of Maulana Saad and several hundred unnamed persons over a clash between the two factions of Tableague Tamaat recently. 

A number of pilgrims were killed and several others injured during the clash between the two feuding factions of Tableague Jamaat men. One group belongs to Maulana Jubair and another group to Maulana Saad.

The prominent accused of the case are-Syed Wasiful Islam, his son Wasama Islam Anu, Abdullah Mansur, Kazi Irteza Hasan, Moaz-Bin-Noor, Zia Bin Kashem, Azimuddin, Anwar Abdullah and Shafiullah.
