CUMILLA, Jan 8, 2025 (BSS) – A daughter saved her ailing father’s life, who was suffering from chronic liver disease by donating more than half of her liver.

Umme Ayman, a 22-year-old young woman, made the brave decision of donating 60 percent of her liver to her 54-year-old father Maulana Md. Nurul Islam as he  had long been suffering from liver cirrhosis. Both the father and daughter have recovered completely after eight weeks of their surgery.

This rare incident happened between Maulana Md. Nurul Islam, of Duaria village in Debidwar upazila of Comilla and lecturer of Duaria AG Model School and College and his second daughter Umme Ayman.

Family sources said Maulana Md. Nurul Islam fell sick in 2012. He was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis and complete liver damage and was on the verge of death.

Nurul Islam has a family of six members including his wife, one son and three daughters. His wife Julekha Begum, 48 is a housewife while his only son Md. Asadullah Galiv, 14, is studying in class nine at Dhamati Kamil Madrasa.

Of the three daughters, the eldest daughter Umme Habiba, 24, and Umme Ayman, 22, are married. The younger daughter Umme Hani, 18, is a graduate student of Comilla Victoria Government College.

As part of profound love towards her father, the second daughter Umme Ayman stood by her father. Umme Ayman is working as a medical technologist at the Sarulia 'Assifa Physiotherapy Center' in Dhaka’s Demra. Her husband Md. Maksudur Rahman Eman is also working as a medical technologist at the same center.

Ayman said that her husband's inspiration in donating 60 percent of her liver to her father has also given her enough strength.

While talking to this correspondent Nurul Islam said, “I have spent several lakhs of  money for my treatment by selling land and taking loans from bank. At one point I lost all my hopes. My daughter’s wish came as a blessing in my life, and I got a second chance to live.”

On July 29, 2024, Ayman was admitted at the 'Institute of Liver and Liver Science Hospital' in Delhi, India under the supervision of Dr. Bilinder Pameja for liver transplant. On November 11, doctors successfully removed 60 percent of his daughter Umme Ayman's liver and transplanted it inside her father's body, he said.

Nurul Islam returned to the country on December 13 after recovering fully.

Bursting with excitement, Umme Ayman said, "As a child, I feel blessed to have donated a part of my liver to save my father's life. My husband's inspiration in this regard has given me courage. I am now completely fit, both physically and mentally."

Her husband Md. Maksudur Rahman Emon said, "My father-in-law is like my father. I am proud of Ayman and welcome her decision to save her father's life."
