DHAKA, Jan 15, 2025 (BSS) - A petition has been filed at the apex court today to hold hearing on the appeals challenging the High Court verdict in Awami League lawmaker Ahsanullah Master murder case.

Senior lawyer Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal filed the plea with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on January 14.

"Many convicts have served their jail terms but are not being able to come out of jail because their appeals are yet to be disposed of. So, I pleaded to hold hearing on the appeals quickly," Barrister Kazal said.

Ahsanullah Master, a veteran freedom fighter, labour leader and teacher, was brutally murdered in broad daylight by a group of miscreants on May 7, 2004.

His brother Motiur Rahman filed a case with Tongi Police Station the next day against 17 people and another 10/12 unidentified miscreants over the murder. A speedy trial tribunal on April 16, 2005, sentenced 22 people to death and another six to life imprisonment. The convicts later filed appeals with the High Court at different times seeking acquittal.

The High Court on June 15, 2016, upheld death for six and life imprisonment for another seven people convicted in the sensational murder trial.
