DHAKA, Jan 29, 2025 (BSS) - The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sued former Barguna-1 MP of Awami League Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu and his wife Madhabi Debnath over allegations of amassing illegal wealth beyond their known sources of income.
The ACC, anti-graft body, has also issued notices to Shambhu's son Sunam Debnath, daughter Shukla Debnath, and Sunam’s wife Kaspiya Talukdar, asking them to submit their wealth statements immediately.
ACC Deputy Director (DD) and Public Relation Officer (PRO) Akhtarul Islam told journalists today that ACC assistant director M Ruhul Amin filed two cases against the former Awami League lawmaker and his wife with ACC Dhaka-1 Office.
He said Shambhu acquired assets worth Taka 47.34 crore, including movable and immovable assets worth about Taka 5 crore, 41 lakh 20 thousand and 125, which are inconsistent with his known sources of income.
He is accused of conducting abnormal and suspicious transactions of Taka 41 crore, 93 lakh, 25 thousand and 702 in total 16 bank accounts.
The ACC considered it as committing a punishable offence, involving money laundering.
Shambhu, who served as the district Awami League president for over three decades, was elected MP from Barguna-1 five times.
There is a widespread allegation that Shambu amassed hundreds of crores through corruption, irregularities, and political exploitation at the district level.
Another case was filed against his wife Madhabi Debanth accusing her of colluding to acquire Taka 2 crore, 2 lakh, 41 thousand and 404 which went his beyond income sources.
In this case, Dhirendra Debnath Shambu has been allegedly accused.
It is mentioned in the case that Madhobi Debnath, wife of Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, has influenced her husband Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu's power to benefit financially in his own interests for misconduct.
She has committed a punishable offense by transferring and transforming the money to the transaction of Taka 8 crore, 45 lakh, 61 thousand and 278 in seven bank accounts.
Meanwhile, the ACC has summoned Sunam Debnath, her wife Kaspia Talukder and Shambhu’s daughter Sukla Debanth to submit their wealth statements to the ACC office.
