Ex-MP Mizanur gets 8-year jail in graft case

DHAKA, Jan 30, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced former Khulna-2 lawmaker Mizanur Rahman to eight years of imprisonment in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Judge Md Abu Taher of Dhaka Special Judge Court-3 pronounced the judgment in presence of the convict and sent him back to jail with conviction warrant.

"The court sentenced him three-year jail and fined him Taka 20,000 under section 26(2) of the Anti Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and another five-year jail and fined Taka 30,000 under section 27(1) of the same act. The two sentences of jail, however, will run concurrently," court clerk Mehedi Hasan told BSS.

The court also ordered to confiscate Taka 1, 44, 50, 989, which the convict amassed illegally, in favor of the state.

ACC director Md Manjur Morshed filed the case on August 6, 2019, for amassing illegal wealth of Taka 1.58 crore and concealing information about wealth of Taka 20 lakh. The ACC on August 23, 2021, filed charge sheet in the case.

The court on January 23 had set today for pronouncing judgment in the case.

Mizanur, who was in bail in the case, appeared before the court on that day for the hearing. The court after setting the verdict day canceled his bail and sent him to jail.
