Victim families of July-August uprising block Shahbag, demand Justice

DHAKA, Feb 6, 2025 (BSS) - Family members of the victims of July-August uprising today staged a demonstration blocking Shahbag intersection in the capital demanding Justice of the killers of their near and dear ones.

The victims' family members from across the country gathered at the Shahbag intersection today noon demanding Justice of the killers and getting compensation for their martyred and injured family members. 

The protesting people while talking to BSS said that the main objective of today's blockade is to demand Justice for their losses.

Rasheda Begum came to Shahbag, demanding Justice for the killing of her son- in-law Shahdat Hossain, who was martyred at Mirpur-2 during the July-August uprising. But none of the killers of her son- in-law is yet to be tried although six months of the interim government have already gone.

Another women named Moyna Akter, who lost her husband during the movement, said that her husband was killed at Kajla in the city. She had received compensation from July Foundation. Asked why she has come here since she got the compensation, she said, "I want justice for the killing of my husband."

Rezaul Karim, father of martyred Sohag, who was killed on July 19 at North Badda area in the capital, came to Shahbag from Peerganj of Bhola demanding Justice for the killing of his son.

He said, "On July 19 after Juma prayer, my son went out alive but returned home dead. He was shot on his chest and died. If we do not get Justice for the killing of our beloved son, the sacrifice of our son will go in vein."

However, vehicular movements in and around the area were witnessed standstill due to enforcement of strict blockade in the busy Shahbag intersection. Commuters had to suffer a lot for the blockade programmes.
