DHAKA, Feb 12, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed today said despite BNP’s continued generosity towards Jamaat-e-Islami as an Islamist political party, it has only received betrayal in return.

“Although the Awami League announced to ban the party (Jamaat-e-Islami) after independence, BNP did not support the decision. Instead, it supported Jamaat as an Islamist political party. However, despite this generosity, BNP has received betrayal in return,” he said.

Rizvi was addressing the memorial discussion on the occasion of the 23rd death anniversary of founding president of Taherpur Municipal BNP Abdul Wahed Mondal, held at a local high school ground in Bagmara Upazila, Rajshahi.

He said Jamaat-e-Islami has been conducting its politics by taking advantage of this generosity. “In the 1980s, we all had united in a movement against the autocratic ruler Ershad. At that time, BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and other leaders of the movement had agreed not to participate in any election under Ershad.”

“However, the hypocritical (Munafiq) Jamaat did not keep its word; instead, they joined the election in alliance with the Awami League,” he said.

Chaired by BNP Taherpur municipal president Abu Naim Mohammad Samsur Rahman, it was also addressed by BNP's health affairs secretary Dr Rafiqul Islam, central committee member Saiful Islam, District BNP Convener Abu Said, Member Secretary Bishwanath Sarkar, Rajshahi city BNP Convener Ershad Ali, Member Secretary Mamun-ur-Rashid, and Bagmara BNP member secretary Kamal Hossain.

Rizvi said, “Under the fascist Awami League rule, there was no freedom of speech. If anyone expressed  difference of opinion, they were either abducted or murdered. Opposition leaders and activists were imprisoned for years in secret torture cells named ‘Aynaghar’ and harassed through politically motivated cases.”
